That first wobbly step is a milestone parents never forget — but behind the scenes, your toddler is mastering a whole world of movement long before they let go of your hand.
Gross motor development refers to the growth of the big muscle groups that help tamariki sit, crawl, stand, walk, run, and climb. At Three Trees Learning Centre, we believe everyday play is the best way to support these important skills.
Here’s how you can help your toddler build strength, balance, and coordination — while keeping playtime fun and pressure-free.
Why Gross Motor Development Matters
Strong gross motor skills support more than just physical ability. They help your child gain independence, navigate their environment confidently, and even improve sleep and concentration. Movement also plays a huge role in brain development — helping children process sensory input and develop self-regulation.
Everyday Activities that Support Big Movement
You don’t need fancy toys or structured programmes to help your toddler thrive. These simple ideas can be part of your daily routine:
Obstacle Courses: Use cushions, boxes, and soft toys to create a safe course to crawl over, around, and through.
Nature Walks: Uneven ground, tree roots, and grassy hills all challenge balance in safe, natural way
Dancing: Put on music and move together! Dancing builds coordination, rhythm, and core strength.
Push-and-Pull Play: Trolleys, toy buggies, or large boxes are perfect for little legs learning to walk with support.
Climbing: Low, safe structures or padded play areas give toddlers the chance to climb, slide, and build body awareness.
Encouragement Over Expectation
Remember: every tamaiti develops at their own pace. Some toddlers walk at 12 months, others not until closer to 18. There’s no “right” timeline. What matters most is giving them time, space, and encouragement to explore.
Offer praise for effort, not just achievement. “You’re trying so hard!” goes a long way in building confidence and resilience.
How We Support Movement at Three Trees
At Three Trees, gross motor development is built into our daily rhythm. Whether it’s outdoor adventures in our natural play spaces, dancing in the sunshine, or helping toddlers climb, balance, and explore — we support each child’s unique movement journey with care and encouragement.
Big movements lead to big confidence. And we’re here for every wobble, bounce, and breakthrough along the way.
