Simple Ways to Support Your Child's Immunity This Winter

As winter settles over Canterbury, it's not uncommon for tamariki to experience the occasional sniffle or cough. Between chilly mornings, rainy days and spending more time indoors (and in close contact with other children), winter can bring its fair share of seasonal bugs.
While it's impossible to prevent every illness, there are plenty of simple, everyday habits that can help support your child's overall health and wellbeing throughout the colder months. From nourishing meals and quality sleep to active play and good hygiene, these healthy routines can make a real difference.
At Three Trees Learning Centre, we know that healthy tamariki are happy learners. Here are some practical ways you can help support your preschooler's wellbeing this winter.
Fuel Growing Bodies with Nutritious Foods
Young children need a balanced diet to support their growth, development and overall wellbeing. Winter is the perfect time to introduce warming, nourishing meals packed with protein and vegetables, alongside some wonderful, colourful fruit options.
Some simple ways to encourage healthy eating include:
Offering a variety of colourful fruit and vegetables each day
Including wholegrains for sustained energy and fibre
Choosing lean proteins such as chicken, fish, eggs, beans and lentils
Providing dairy foods or suitable alternatives for growing bones
Encouraging regular water intake throughout the day
Remember, tamariki often need to see a new food several times (research says it can take as many as 15 times or more!) before they're willing to try it. Keep offering healthy options without pressure and celebrate small wins.
Make Mealtimes Fun
Getting children involved in preparing meals can also encourage healthy eating. Washing vegetables, stirring ingredients or choosing fruit for lunchboxes for outings, helps build confidence while creating positive associations with nutritious food.
Prioritise a Good Night's Sleep
Sleep plays an important role in your child's overall health, mood and ability to learn. After busy days exploring, playing and growing, preschoolers need plenty of quality rest.
Most preschool-aged tamariki need around 10–13 hours of sleep each day, including naps where appropriate.
To encourage healthy sleep habits:
Keep bedtimes and wake-up times consistent
Create a calming bedtime routine
Limit screen time before bed
Make bedrooms comfortable, quiet and dark
Read stories together before sleep
A well-rested child is often happier, more engaged and ready to make the most of each new day.
Keep Tamariki Moving, Even When It's Cold
When it's wet and chilly outside, it can be tempting to stay indoors. However, regular physical activity remains an important part of a healthy lifestyle all year round.
Movement helps children develop:
Gross motor skills
Strength and coordination
Confidence
Emotional wellbeing
Healthy lifelong habits
At Three Trees Learning Centre, we believe there's no such thing as bad weather… only the wrong clothing! With warm layers and waterproof gear, children can continue exploring nature, splashing in puddles and enjoying fresh air whenever it's safe to do so.
On particularly rainy days, dancing, obstacle courses, yoga and imaginative movement games are fantastic ways to stay active indoors.
Encourage Plenty of Fresh Air
Fresh air and outdoor play remain valuable during winter. Even on crisp Canterbury mornings, spending time outside allows children to explore, move their bodies and connect with nature. Getting outside and enjoying fresh air also bolsters children’s immune systems as well as providing natural light exposure to support regulation of the body’s circadian rhythm.
Whether it's collecting autumn leaves, spotting birds, balancing on logs or jumping in puddles after the rain, outdoor adventures offer rich learning opportunities while supporting children's physical and emotional wellbeing.
Build Healthy Handwashing Habits
One of the simplest ways to reduce the spread of everyday germs is through good hand hygiene. Teaching tamariki how and when to wash their hands helps establish lifelong healthy habits.
Encourage handwashing:
Before eating
After using the toilet
After coughing or sneezing
After touching pets or animals
After wiping noses
After outdoor play
When arriving home or at preschool
Make handwashing fun by singing a favourite song while washing with soap and water for around 20 seconds. Be sure to encourage drying hands well.
Pack for Winter Success
Being prepared for changing weather helps tamariki stay comfortable throughout the day.
A well-packed preschool bag might include:
Warm layers
A waterproof jacket
Waterproof pants or coveralls
Gumboots
A warm hat
Spare socks
A complete change of clothes
Dry, comfortable children are much more likely to enjoy outdoor learning experiences, regardless of the weather.
Support Healthy Habits at Home and Preschool
Tamariki thrive when healthy routines are reinforced both at home and in their early learning environment.
At Three Trees Learning Centre, we encourage healthy habits through:
Regular outdoor play
Nutritious food choices
Good hand hygiene practices
Daily physical activity
Calm routines that support children's wellbeing
Warm, welcoming environments where children feel safe and supported
By working together with whānau, we help create positive habits that children can carry with them as they grow.
